Macedonia climbed to 72nd position in the economic freedom ranking of the Canadian Fraser Institute, from 80th place in the previous issue of the report. The report surveyed the performance of 141 countries in 2008. Hong Kong had the highest economic freedom rating overall. Macedonias summary rating improved from 6.7 in 2007 to 6.83 in 2008, with the highest possible rating being 10. The improvement reflects better standing in the following areas: size of government; legal structure and security of property rights; and regulation of credit, labor, and business. Deterioration was observed in two areas: access to sound money and freedom to trade internationally. In the region, the following countries had better rankings than Macedonia: Bulgaria (36th), Albania (48th), Slovenia (61st) and Montenegro (66th). On the other hand, Croatia (87th), Serbia (97th) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (111th) had worse ratings. |
