Largest Romanian power consumer speaks against renewable energy support.

By bne IntelliNews February 1, 2013
Romanian aluminium producer Alro has openly criticised the renewable energy support scheme of the government, accusing it for the major negative impact on consumers and massive distortions on the free market, Ziarul Financiar daily reported, quoting the company's deputy CEO, Marian Nastase, as saying. Moreover, the wind power industry does not generate a significant number of workplaces, Nastase said. It is the first time that a large company speaks openly against the support provided to the green energy support scheme and its statement comes at a time when the government itself has expressed concerns related to the side-effects of the tradable green certificates (TGC) system. According to the daily, power regulator ANRE has calculated that the end-users will pay a huge amount of EUR 10bn (7.4% of last year's GDP) only for the support given to the renewable energy producers. The generators would cash under the TGC system EUR 0.5bn in 2013, when 4pps of the expected 10% electricity price hike would be prompted exactly by the TGC, energy minister Constantin Nita estimates.
