Kosovo posts 3.5% GDP growth in Q1

Kosovo’s gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by a real 3.5% y/y in the first quarter of 2018, after growing by 3.2% in the previous quarter, estimated data from the Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) indicated.

The IMF recently projected that the Kosovan economy will grow by an annual 4% in 2018, 2019 and 2023. However, the World Bank projects that Kosovo’s economy will expand even higher, by 4.8%, this year. Kosovo posted GDP growth of 3.74% in 2017.

Kosovo’s nominal GDP in current prices amounted to €1.291bn in Q1, compared to €1.667bn in Q4.

The biggest increase in Q1 was registered in the financial and insurance activities sector (10.8%), followed by construction (9.9%), transport and storage (6%), wholesale and retail (5.2%),  processing industry (4.8%), public administration (2.6%), electricity, water and water treatment sector (2.6%), real estate (1.8%), hotels and restaurants (1%) as well as agriculture, hunting and forestry (0.7%).

The mining and quarrying sector fell by 12.1% y/y in Q1.

GDP according to expenditure approach has increased y/y in Q1 in: export of goods and services (16.2%), the gross capital formation (10.0%), import of goods and services (7.8%), government final consumption (5.2%) and household final consumption including non-profit institutions serving households (1.4%).
