British auto manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover is considering setting up a car manufacturing plant in South Africa, Business Day reported, quoting information by South Africas Department of Trade and Industry. The British car maker, wholly owned by Indias Tata Motors, saw its sales soaring 91% y/y in Q2 2012 thanks to higher demand, mainly from China. It is thus seeking to establish new manufacturing facilities to meet growing demand and become an established global brand, and has already signed a joint venture with state-owned Chinese car maker Chery to build a plant near Shanghai. Jaguar Land Rover declined to confirm the report, saying it is routinely in ongoing discussions with regard to a number of different locations and any announcement would be likely to be made at the Paris motor show, opening on September 29. A number of global auto makers have vehicle manufacturing plants in South Africa, including Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Toyota, Volkswagen, Nissan, Renault and others. A Jaguar Land Rover factory would be the first all-new car maker in the country since 1995. |
