Hungarys retail sales drop for sixth straight month in Sep 2012.

Hungary's calendar-adjusted retail sales decreased for the sixth consecutive month in September 2012, falling by 3.1% y/y to HUF 716.8bn (EUR 2.54bn), the statistics office informed. In monthly terms, sales edged down by 0.4% m/m in both seasonal and calendar-adjusted terms, after declining 0.2% m/m in August. The annual drop was determined by a decline in both food and non-food trade, which were down by 3.7% y/y and 3.3% y/y, respectively. In addition, automotive fuel sales contracted by 3.3% y/y. Within the non-food category, the steepest drop of 11.3% y/y was reported for sales of furniture and electrical goods. The turnover in the book stores, pharmaceutical, computer shops also decreased in September. The sales in the four categories of second-hand stores, non-specialized stores, textiles and pharmaceuticals reversed to an annual growth in September. Sales in the cosmetics continued to grow in the month. Mail orders retail trade remained the fastest growing segment (22.6% y/y), positively influenced by the strong expansion of internet sales. However, the sector had relatively low contribution to the overall index.
