Hungary's annual inflation slowed to 5.5% in March 2012, after accelerating in the previous two months, the statistics office KSH said. On a monthly basis, price growth remained unchanged at 0.8%. Excluding effects from the tax changes, prices increased by 3.4% y/y in March, slower than Januarys annual growth of 3.9%. As in the previous two months, prices in all groups comprising the index were on an upward trend in March, with consumer durable goods the only exception (down 1.4% y/y). Alcoholic beverages and tobacco prices moved up by 10.8% y/y, considerably faster than the 2011 average of 0.5% y/y. Food prices advanced by 4.7% y/y, after rising by 6% y/y in the previous month. Costs in the group other goods grew by 8.6% y/y pushed up by higher motor fuel prices. Prices of electricity, gas and other fuels were also up by 6.8% on the year, due to the growth in prices of purchased heat (11.9% y/y) and butane and propane gas (11.7% y/y). Prices of services and of clothing and footwear grew less that the average by 4.1% y/y and 3.6% y/y, respectively. |
