Hungary's freight volume down 11% in Q3 2011.

Hungary's freight companies transported 69.8mn tones of goods in the third quarter of 2011, a decrease of 11% y/y as the sector was affected by the unstable recovery of the domestic economy, data from the statistics office showed. The weak performance was observed in all transport sectors except rail transportation, which expanded by 2%y/y. The road, inland waterway and pipeline transportation worsened by 13% y/y, 32.7%y/y and 6.4% y/y, respectively. The 16.3% y/y decline in cargo volume in the domestic transportation sector was only partially offset by a 3% y/y expansion of international transportation. In terms of tonnes per kilometre, the deterioration was much moderate at 2.3% y/y in Q3, while the marginal 0.9% y/y decline reported for Q2 was revised to a 1.2% growth. The international deliveries, expressed in tonne-kilometre edged up by a 0.8% y/y on an annual basis, while domestic transportation dropped by 9.5% on the year.
