Hungary's 2011 wheat harvest up by 10%y/y.

By bne IntelliNews September 21, 2011
Hungary's 2011 wheat harvest reached 4.13mn tonnes, surpassing by 10% the amount gathered a year ago, statistics office data showed. The better harvest came despite the 3% decline in the used arable land. Among the other cereals, rye was produced on 12% y/y less hectares in 2011, which resulted in a 3% decrease in the harvest, but improved yields (up 10% to 2,330 kg from hectare). Winter barley was produced in almost the same quantity as a year ago, while spring barley gave an 18% better harvest on the year. As a whole, although cereal products were grown on smaller area, the production increased by 8% y/y in 2011. The better harvest will ease the pressure on cereal prices in the country.
