EU to refuse Albania candidate country status - Report.

By bne IntelliNews October 28, 2010
The European Commission will recommend to the European Council to refuse granting of EU candidate country status to Albania, Reuters news agency said citing an EU official. This opinion will be included in the annual progress report, which is due to be published by the EC on Nov 9. The council is expected to grant candidate status to Montenegro but defer opening entry talks with the country, due to corruption and slow democratic reform. Albania applied for EU membership last year. In our view, if the EC denies the EU candidate status to Albania, it will be most likely due to the lack of positive results in the fight against corruption and organised crime as well as due to the lack of political consensus, which blocked the implementation of key reforms in the country.
