By bne IntelliNews January 31, 2011
The Schengen Area evaluation committee Sch-EVAL endorsed a positive report on Romanias SIS-SIRENE system, required as technical condition for joining the Schengen agreement, while postponing the vote on the Bulgarian report, Agerpres reported. The SIS/SIRENE system is implemented in Romania in line with the Schengen acquis, the report said. Nonetheless, the countrys accession to the agreement has to be endorsed unanimously by the EU interior ministers. They will be summoned for a council of justice and home affairs on February 24. The council will probably not decide on the two countries' accession, but will only be presented with their readiness status. Meanwhile, the Committee on civil liberties, justice and home affairs with the European Parliament is supposed to vote on the two countries' accession to the Schengen agreement on February 14. This vote has consultative function.
