Estonia's producer price index (PPI) grew 1.6% y/y in December, data released by Statistics Estonia showed on January 21.

The headline figure sees PPI inflation at the same y/y level as in November, extending the current trend of PPI inflation to 27 months. On a monthly basis, the index fell 0.6% in October after retreating 0.9% in the preceding month.

The annual PPI growth in December came on the back of prices shooting up 39.7% y/y in the utility sector. Elsewhere, growth was minimal or prices declined, repeating the pattern seen in November.

In water supply, PPI inched up 0.3% y/y while falling 2.6% y/y in mining and quarrying. Prices also fell 1% y/y in manufacturing.

In m/m terms, PPI did not change in the water supply sector. Factory gate prices retreated 0.8% m/m in manufacturing and 0.3% m/m in mining and quarrying. There was a growth of 0.7% m/m in the utility sector.

Estonia's consumer price index (CPI) grew 3.4% y/y in December, driven by growing prices of electricity, solid fuels, and rent rates.

The overall price growth was 3.4% in 2017, a major pick up compared to inflation of just 0.1% in 2016.
