EP praises Albania’s visa liberalisation progress.

By bne IntelliNews September 3, 2010
The European Parliaments standing committee on civil liberties, justice and home affairs praised the progress made by Albanian authorities in meeting the criteria for liberalisation of the EU visa regime. Committee members commented that there was no reason for a further delay of the process. The final paper is expected to be presented on Sep 13. In particular, the members of the EU parliament acknowledged the progress in three key areas, which the European Commission (EC) considered as problematic in its earlier reports. The government was found to have achieved progress in the implementation of the strategy of returnees, with the adoption of an action plan in June. Authorities consolidated many resources in efforts to seize criminal assets. The fight against organized crime and corruption was also found to have advanced to a certain degree. The committee noted that Bosnia and Herzegovina has also made progress in the fulfillment of the visa liberalisation roadmap. The liberalization of the EU visa regime with Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro came into force at the beginning of 2010.
