EE: Estonian Railways cargo handling up by 3% y/y in 2011.

Railroad infrastructure company Estonian Railways has reported that total cargo handling on the companys rail infrastructure stood at 30.5mn tons in 2011, which indicates 3% y/y increase. In December total cargo handling amounted to 2.7mn tons, down by 5.7% y/y. In 2011, oil and oil products volume stood at 19.9mn tons, down by 2.1% y/y. Oil shale volume grew by 32% y/y and amounted to 4.9mn tons in 2011. Fertilizer cargo volume 2.5mn tons, which indicates 10.3% y/y growth in the figure. Transit shipments accounted for 76% of total cargo at 23.1mn tons, local shipments accounted for 5.4mn tons, up by 27.6% y/y. Import increased by 42% y/y to 1.3mn tons, while export increased by 12.3% y/y to 0.7mn tons. TEU containers carriage volume increased by 46% y/y to 32,811 units in 2011.
