EC advises Croatia to focus on judiciary reforms.

The European Commission (EC) said that the country has to show concrete results and progress in the judiciary by passing and enforcing the necessary laws, local media reported. The EC reminded that judiciary and fundamental rights, as well as competition policy were of crucial importance for the completion of the accession talks. EU commissioner for justice, fundamental rights and citizenship, Viviane Reding, said that the policy chapter on judiciary and fundamental rights was one of the most sensitive and important chapters. The country had opened all of the 22 policy chapters in its negotiations for EU membership and has so far closed 22 of them. A week ago, the head of the national EU accession monitoring committee, Vesna Pusic, said she expected closing of all chapters by March 2011. Thus, the country will be able to complete the negotiations process in June 2011. Pusic explained that five policy chapters will probably be closed at the intergovernmental conference, scheduled for November. The talks on another three chapters will most likely be wrapped up in December, while the remaining three chapters, namely competition policy, judiciary and fundamental rights, and finance and budgetary provisions, will remain for 2011.
