Czech Republic expresses interest in Uzbek uranium and copper

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala expressed his country’s interest in Uzbekistan’s uranium and copper supplies and mining industry as he met Uzbek counterpart Abdulla Aripov at Straka Academy, the seat of the Czech government, in Prague on October 10.

Aripov’s visit followed his meeting with Fiala in Tashkent in April. As bne IntelliNews has previously reported, last year Uzbekistan ranked fifth globally in uranium production, with production of 3,300 tonnes.

Fiala and Aripov also discussed the export of Czech-made mining equipment to Uzbekistan, as well as cooperation in the fields of transport and education.

Czech defence companies earlier this year expressed an interest in becoming reliable partners to Uzbekistan’s armed forces, offering alternatives to military equipment from Russia.

"Since spring, we managed to conclude a contract for two L-410 aircraft, and Uzbekistan Airways recently received them. Skoda Transportation is bidding for the supply of trains, trams and metro sets to Uzbekistan. We are very supportive of its offer of 34 train sets for regional services,” Fiala said on social network X.

If Skoda Transportation succeeds in the tender, it would be the largest contract ever awarded to a Czech company by Uzbekistan.
