Constitutional court to decide who represents Romania at European Council.

By bne IntelliNews June 27, 2012
Romanias constitutional court will rule on Wednesday, June 27, on the inquiry filed by President Traian Basescu regarding the countrys representation at the European Council, news service HotNews reported. We recall that there is an on-going dispute between Basescu and the countrys leftist PM Victor Ponta on the issue and each of them claims he is the legitimate representative. Until now, the president participated in all meetings of the Council. But the parliament, where Pontas leftist coalition enjoys majority, has issued a statement, saying that the prime minister is the one who should represent the country at such meetings. As a response, Basescu has cited law texts in his defence. The direct negotiations between the two have failed. Ponta will attend the constitutional courts meeting on this dispute, but he refuses to accept the courts ruling as binding. The court can at most conclude there is a conflict between the parliament and the president, Ponta said. Ponta already booked his flight to Brussels on June 28 and made the necessary arrangements to partake in the councils meeting, according to his past statements.
