Bulgarias December foreign tourist arrivals rise 4.8% y/y.

The number of foreign tourists visiting Bulgaria rose by 4.8% y/y to 374,311 in December 2010, after decreasing by 7.3% a year earlier, the statistics office said on its website. The increase was mainly on the back of a 9.6% annual rise in the number of foreigners just transiting the country and a 7.2% rise in the number of holiday makers. Business trips fell by 3.7% y/y. Tourists from EU countries decreased by 2% y/y to 218,671. Neighbouring Romania was the major source of tourists, as the number of Romanians visiting the country increased by 18.1% to 93,876. Non-EU arrivals were by 15.1% higher on the year and the sharpest increases were registered by visitors from Serbia (52.2%), Norway (46.1%) and Switzerland (25.5%). The number of Bulgarians travelling abroad decreased by 14.7% y/y to 254,198 in December 2010, after falling down by 24.2% y/y in the same month of 2009. Business trips accounted for 45.5% of all travels and the most preferred destinations were Turkey, Greece and Serbia.
