Bulgaria fell 15 places from 38th to 53rd position out of 58 countries in the ranking of the World Competitiveness Yearbook of Switzerland's Institute for Management Development. The only EU member state to rank behind Bulgaria is Romania, which occupied 54th place. As regards the countries in the region, Croatia also ranked worse than Bulgaria. Bulgaria scored 47.756 with the best result being 100 for Singapore and the worst being 27.97 for Venezuela. The overall assessment is based on 327 criteria grouped in four: economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency and infrastructure. The deterioration of Bulgaria's position is due mostly to the economic performance ranking, where the country fell 20 places. FDI is the worst performing indicator but effects from the world economic downturn on the macroeconomic indicators have also contributed to the overall worsening. As regards government and business efficiency rankings, the country fell 4 and 9 places respectively. The position in the infrastructure criterion fell by 5 places.
