Billa to operate 85 supermarkets in Bulgaria by year-end.

Austrian retail chain Billa is to operate 85 supermarkets across the country by the end of 2010 as compared to 71 stores in 35 towns at present, Billa Bulgaria CEO Emil Stefanov told Dnevnik Daily in an interview. The retailer plans to open some 20 stores this year and about 15 in 2010. It considers the biggest cities like Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas its main priority. Billa reported a 35% increase in the number of its customers last year and claimed they have become more price sensitive. Recently, the company announced plans to invest between BGN 65mn (EUR 33.2mn) and BGN 71mn (EUR 36.3mn) per year in Bulgaria from 2011 to 2014. It has recently opened a BGN 23mn, 16,600 sq m logistics base near the capital Sofia. Billa, a member of REWE Group, manages the largest retail network at national level. It set foot on the Bulgarian market in 2000.
