Austrian retailer Billa plans to run 85 stores in Bulgaria by year-end.

Austrian retail chain Billa is to open 11 new supermarkets by the end of 2010, thus raising the total number of its supermarkets to 85 across the country, Billa Bulgaria CEO Emil Stefanov told a news conference marking the tenth anniversary of the company's presence in Bulgaria. The retailer vows to keep the same expansion rate in the coming years as well. A total of 3,800 employees work for Billa Bulgaria and their number is to exceed 4,000 by the end of the year. Billa, a member of REWE Group, manages the largest retail network at national level. It set foot on the Bulgarian market in 2000 and has invested BGN 500mn (EUR 255.6mn) in development and expansion since. Earlier in the year, the company announced plans to invest between BGN 65mn (EUR 33.2mn) and BGN 71mn (EUR 36.3mn) per year in Bulgaria between 2011 and 2014.
