Albanias youngest mobile operator Plus Communications has expanded the coverage of its 3G-ready GSM/EDGE radio and core network to more than 85% of the countrys territory, according to a statement of Nokia Siemens Networks, which has been contracted to supply the technical equipment and network construction. Plus Communications has no 3G license yet, but hopes to win the next tender procedure, which is expected to be launched in February 2012. Currently, two of the four mobile phone companies in Albania offer 3G services. The local unit of UKs Vodafone won the countrys first 15-year 3G licence in November 2010 offering EUR 31.4mn. Albanian Mobile Communications (AMC), the local subsidiary of Greek OTE, won the second tender in September 2011 offering the highest bid of EUR 15.1mn. Plus Communications officially launched operations on November 27, 2010 and a year later it reported some 0.4mn subscribers, securing about a market share of some 8%. The company was established by Kosovos Post-Telecom (PTK) and a group of local investors in June 2009, after winning a 15-year mobile licence.
