The Albanian government has approved loan agreements with the World Banks International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) to support water management projects in the country, the prime ministers press office said in a statement. The bank will fund a water resources management and irrigation project in Albania including rehabilitation and modernisation of dams and irrigation systems as well as improving the performance of organisations that provide irrigation and drainage services. Under the project, the Albanian authorities also plan to draft National Strategy for Integrated Water Resources Management and to prepare management plans for the Drina-Buna and Seman river basins. Albania and the World Bank signed in December 2012 a EUR 31mn loan deal. The 23-year credit will have a grace period of seven years. In addition, the Swedish government will provide a EUR 3.88mn grant, which will be used to finance the establishment of a national database on water resources in Albania.
