The EU would give a candidate country status to Albania in early 2011, integration minister Majlinda Bregu told Reuters in an interview. She believes that the European Commission will prepare its opinion on the country's progress by end-2010, after reviewing the questionnaire, which will be submitted by the government by end-March. The document was handed over to Albanian authorities last week. As noted the questionnaire includes 2,280 questions in 384 pages. Great weight will be placed on the political criteria. Major points will concern the progress in judiciary, economy and security fields. Moreover, Bregu highlighted that the successful implementation of the process depends on the broad political cooperation, which currently is stuck by the parliamentary boycott of the opposition Socialist Party. The European Commission as well as other international institutions has repeatedly asked the political parties to enter constructive dialogue.
