The United Nations Environmental Protection (UNEP) has selected Albania along with five other countries to take part in a program for the promotion of solar energy, daily Koha Jone reported. The project aims to facilitate the development of clean and sustainable energy generation and to mitigate the climate change in general. It foresees the installation of solar panels in the country, which will be implemented within 4-year period. The total cost of the initiative in Albania is estimated at USD 2.75mn. We note that the country is part UN Convention for Climate Change and has ratified the Kyoto Protocol for reduction of greenhouse gases. The participation in UN project is considered as a step towards establishment of a long-term domestic market and reaching the target for environmental protection. Moreover, the government has already approved the construction of the first wind park, which will be built near Vlora and will provide a capacity of 500MW of electricity.
