Albanian minister of transport and public works Sokol Olldashi has invited companies from countries, members of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), to invest in road and railway projects in Albania, ATA news agency informed. The minister made his statement during the third conference on foreign investments, organised by the Albanian Investment Development Agency (AIDA) and the IDB. The Albanian government announced last February it will draft a new law on the country's railways system, which along with the restructuring of the railways sector, aims to open the market for other operators and to establish regulatory bodies. State-owned operator Albanian Railways will be split into four separate companies. The remaining activities referring to passenger and cargo transport, as well as maintenance activities would be privatised as separate companies. Although it is still underdeveloped, the importance of the Albanian railway sector is increasing in the prospects of the rapid expansion of other economic sectors such as oil industry. |
