Albania has completed the establishment of a civil registry and address system under an EU-funded project, the EU delegation in Tirana said on ec.europa.eu website. The four-year project, supported by the EU with a EUR 2.5mn fund, envisaged the creation of electronic systems for addresses and civil registration and the establishment of an Office of the Personal Data Protection Commissioner. The new civil registry provides a secure database necessary for the elaboration of biometric passports, a prerequisite for the completion of the visa liberalistion process. The project has been implemented by the OSCE Presence in Albania, with additional funding from the OSCE and in cooperation with the Council of Europe for the data protection component.
