Albania backs US missile defence shield in Europe.

The government fully supports the establishment of a US missile defence shield in Europe , deputy PM and foreign minister Ilir Meta said at a meeting with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in Tirana. US authorities introduced last September the so-called Phased Adaptive Approach (PAA) for the creation of ballistic system. The first stage of the plan foresees fielding of interceptor missiles in SE Europe by 2011, to protect US troops against short-range missile attacks. Albania welcomed all efforts for strengthening peace and stability in the Western Balkans and SEE, Meta added. Rasmussen held separate meetings with PM Sali Berisha, parliament speaker Jozefina Topalli, president Bamir Topi and defence minister Arben Imami. The NATO head praised Albania s efforts during the first year of its membership in the Alliance . He also pledged full support for the process of destruction of the surplus ammunition in Albania , which is scheduled to be finalized in 2014.
