Afghanistan’s Kam Air landed a passenger jet at Tashkent International Airport on November 29, completing the first-ever direct commercial flight from Kabul to Uzbekistan's capital.
At bilateral talks, the Uzbek government has lately been pushing for such direct flights between the two capitals. The two countries aim to provide a twice-a-week Kabul-Tashkent flight from December 8. Without the 90-minute direct flight, Afghan passengers can only reach Uzbekistan via Istanbul and Dubai, letting themselves in for a round trip that can take from 17-32 hours.
Uzbekistan also intends to help Afghanistan build a railway line between the two countries “in order to have a direct route to Iran”, TOLOnews reported in late October.
Kam Air will likely use Tashkent airport as a hub from which it can fly to European countries. Uzbekistan Airways, in turn, intends to start its flights to Kabul from Tashkent in the near future.
The new flights are in tune with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s economic reform drive which includes widening cooperation with his country's neighbours.
