Moldova to connect to Romania’s power grid under €261mn project

By bne IntelliNews January 21, 2021

A 400 kV, 158-km long power transmission line will be built to link Moldova’s capital city Chisinau to the border with Romania, with the aim of connecting the electricity networks of the two countries. The project will be implemented by August 2024 and will cost €261mn.

The interconnection of electricity networks between Moldova and Romania will provide an increased level of energy security by diversifying the sources of electricity supply and permanent access to the European market.

The project will also offer the possibility to choose without constraints the source of energy acquisition, either from the East (Transnistria) or from the West (Romania).

The government of Moldova has already initiated procedures to declare the construction works on the project a national priority.

The electricity transmission air line will cross the territory of 35 localities from nine regions of the country, including the autonomous region of Gagauzia and Chisinau. At the same time, the 330 kV Chisinau station and 400 kV Vulcanesti station will be modernised and extended.

The works are part of the project "Interconnection of electricity networks between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, Phase I".

To finance the works, Moldova will borrow €80mn from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), €80mn from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and €61mn from the International Development Agency (IDA) and will get a grant of nearly €40mn from the EBRD.
