Slovakia's capital Bratislava might be considered as host to the mooted German Volkswagen Passat production plant that is now looking for a home after the company announced it would not build the €1bn plant in Turkey, sources told German weekly Automobilwoche, the Slovak News Agency (SNA) reported on October 28.

Volkswagen has halted investments in Turkey on the back of economic turmoil and mounting political instability, according to SNA, but the announcement was triggered by the current military operations in north-eastern Syria.

“It’s speculation, we don’t comment on that. The fact remains that the Volkswagen Slovakia car plant has been vying for production of new models in order to secure a portfolio of products for the future. The matters concerning the production of new products haven’t been decided yet,” stated Volkswagen Slovakia in its statement provided to SNA.
