45% of Croatians would support the adoption of the euro, according to a survey carried out by the central bank, HNB.
In July 2020, Croatia was accepted to the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II), which is one of the key steps towards the Eurozone.
The share of people in the latest survey was higher compared to a previous survey, which showed a 41% support for the euro, the central bank said in a statement on March 19.
According to the poll, 19% of Croatians are strongly against the adoption of euro, while 26% are rather not supporting it and 10% have no opinion.
The survey also showed that, according to Croatians, the benefits from adoption of euro would be easier payments and financial operations. Also, they consider that the adoption of the EU currency would make the country equal to the other member states who have joined the Eurozone.
The main risk is believed to be the expected lowering of living standard and purchase power. More than one third of Croatians also expect that the adoption of the euro would lead to significant price hikes.
Earlier in March, Croatia’s Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said he hopes that the country could join the Eurozone and the Schengen area by 2024, when the mandate of the current government ends.
