European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said after a meeting with PM Jadranka Kosor that the Croatia success in the negotiations with the EU for the full membership will be a positive signal to the region that EU accession was possible. PM Kosor stressed that the country was trying to meet all benchmarks on judiciary and fundamental rights policy chapter. She expressed hope that the negotiations on the policy chapter on competition would be closed soon. PM Kosor said that the country would meet all benchmarks and close all policy chapters by early 2011 and would be ready to sign an accession treaty with the EU in the spring. We note that Croatia had already opened the final three chapters in its EU accession negotiations and had closed 20 chapters in its negotiations for the EU membership. EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele said that the accession treaty with Croatia could be signed during the Hungary EU Presidency, namely in the first half of 2011. He stressed that the European Commission will give more details in this respect in the progress report in November.
