USAID says Albania needs to improve competitiveness.

Despite the fact that Albanias trade deficit did not increase in 2009, the reported 8% y/y decrease in overall exports highlight the urgent need for the implementation of measures to improve the competitiveness of local products on the domestic and foreign markets, USAID mission director to Albania Joseph C. Williams said at discussion on the 2009 Foreign Trade Report of the Albanian Centre for Competitiveness and International Trade (ACIT). The decrease in exports suggested some loss of competitive advantage on main export markets, like that for the products of Albanian footwear manufacturing, where exports were down by 5% compared to 2008. This required both more focused state support for this sector but also a need to encourage local exporters to diversify export markets and find new niches, ACIT director Gentian Elezi said.
