Only 44.7% of people living in Bosnia & Herzegovina recognise it as their homeland, according to a survey conducted by the local agency Prime Communications in April.

The survey shows the outcome of years of nationalist tensions, constantly provoked and increased by the leaders of Bosnia’s main ethnic parties. According to analysts, using nationalistic rhetoric and provoking crises is one of the main tools of the politicians used to divert people’s attention from Bosnia’s real problems.

According to the survey, quoted by Klix.ba on June 27, another 28.9% of Bosnians mainly agreed with the statement that Bosnia is their homeland.

On the other hand, 7.2% completely disagreed, while 13.2% mainly disagreed with this statement. 6% declined to answer the question.

Among the three ethnic groups, the highest share of people not recognising Bosnia as their homeland were the Serbs – 20% completely disagreed with the statement “Bosnia is my homeland”, while 28.5% mainly disagreed. The leader of the Serb Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), Milorad Dodik, who is also the president of Republika Srpska, has been threatening for years that the entity will secede from Bosnia.

Just 1% of Croats completely disagreed, while 15.5% mainly disagreed with the statement that Bosnia is their homeland. Among Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), just 0.5% completely disagreed, while 3% mainly disagreed.

The survey was conducted among 1,500 people.
