Turkmen authorities have drafted changes to the country’s constitution, including 28 new laws and amendments to 80 existing laws, news website Turkmenistan.ru reported on February 3, citing Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov as saying in a government meeting.

The decision to alter the constitution comes after recent constitutional changes made in neighboruing Tajikistan, which were to the detriment of democracy. They saw the Tajik President Emomali Rahmon granted lifelong immunity from prosecution, as well as an opportunity for lifelong presidency and the ensuring of a presidential dynasty.

The new Turkmen laws and amendments focus on “rights and freedoms of citizens”, “government systems” and “economic policies”, among other themes, according to the report.

The amendments will be offered for “public discussion” in the country’s newspapers, the report said.
