Vehicle sales in Turkey rose 5.6% y/y in September to 71,352 units, following the 1.4% annual rise seen in August, data from the Automotive Distributors’ Association (ODD) showed on October 3.
Sales of passenger cars increased by 4% y/y to 53,423 units in the month while 17,929 light commercial vehicles (LCVs) were sold, marking a 10% y/y rise.
Total vehicle sales contracted by 2% y/y to 627,343 units across January-August. Passenger car sales fell by 3% y/y to 476,621 while LCV sales increased by 2% y/y to 150,722 units.
The ODD forecasts that auto sales will amount to between 875,000 and 925,000 this year, less than the 1.01mn units sold in 2016.
Last month, the government raised the motor vehicle tax on passenger cars by 40%, effective January 1, 2018.
