Turkish Airlines and Turk Telekom sack hundreds of employees after failed coup

Turkish Airlines (THY) has fired 211 workers, including cabin crew and management, in a post-coup crackdown on alleged supporters of US-based cleric Fetullah Gulen, local media report.

According to Sabah newspaper, some of the dismissals were due to inefficiency but other employees were sacked because of their alleged links to the Gulenist network. There will be more dismissals, said the newspaper. THY shares, which dropped 17% between July 15 and July 21, were up 2.83% at TRY5.09 (€1.53) on July 25.

Turkey’s telecom giant Turk Telekom has also fired nearly 200 staff in the wake of the coup attempt. Some of its managers have been summoned by prosecutors to testify in connection with the coup probe, Turk Telekom said in a statement.

A total of 46,000 state-employees have been suspended after the botched putsch on suspicion of being supporters of Gulen. 3,165 people have been detained over the coup attempt.
