Turkey's unemployment rate did not budge in 2017, remaining at the same 10.9% rate recorded for the previous year, national statistics institute TUIK announced on March 23.

The labour force participation rate, however, rose to 52.8% from 52% in 2016.

The non-agriculture unemployment rate also remained constant. It stood at 13% in 2017 and 2016 while year on year the youth unemployment rate edged up to 24.2% from 24%.

The number of unemployed rose to 3.45mn in 2017 from 3.33mn in 2016 while the number of employed rose to 28.2mn from 27.2mn.

TUIK said on March 15 in its regular monthly unemployment data release that the unemployment rate for December came in at 10.4%, some 2.3pp below where it stood a year earlier.

Turkey’s employment agency plans to enable 1.25 million people to become employed over the course of 2018, Labour and Social Security Minister Julide Sarieroglu added on March 15.

The Turkish government has prepared a set of measures aimed at solving the country’s stubbornly high unemployment ahead of the parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for 2019, Hurriyet Daily News reported last month.

The measures, however, are expected to cost a burdensome TRY17.3bn (€3.5bn), including tax revenue losses.
