Turkey’s unemployment rate falls further to 9.6% in April

Turkey's unemployment rate fell further from 10.1% in March to 9.6% in April, national statistics institute TUIK announced on July 16.

The unemployment rate was recorded at 10.8% in January but fell across the following three months. It was 10.5% in April 2017.

The latest figures also showed the non-agriculture unemployment rate declining from 11.9% in March to 11.4% in April while youth unemployment moved down from 17.7% to 16.9%.

The labour force participation rate edged up from 52.4% in March to 53% in April.

The number of unemployed people fell from 3.21mn in March to 3.09mn in April. The number of employed persons increased by 852,000 from April 2017 to April 2018, a figure less than the 1mn registered for the one-year period from March 2017 to March 2018.

Turkey’s employment agency plans to enable 1.25mn people to become employed over the course of 2018, former Labour and Social Security Minister Julide Sarieroglu said in March.

Turkey's unemployment rate did not budge overall in 2017, remaining at the same 10.9% rate recorded for the previous year.
