Turkey’s foreign arrivals increased by 43% y/y to 3.5mn in June, after rising 18% y/y in April and 16% y/y in May. The growing surge can be largely put down to the return of Russian tourists to the country after Ankara and Moscow restored "full format" relations.

The number of Russian tourists jumped by 1,573% y/y to 763,000 in June, data from the tourism ministry showed on August 1. In the first half of this year, nearly 1.7mn Russians arrived in Turkey, a 820% increase from a year earlier.

The tourism ministry also reported that 1.37mn Europeans visited Turkey in June, a 0.57% y/y increase. The number of European tourists, however, declined by 12.75% y/y to 4.8mn across January-June.

It remains to be seen whether the ongoing tension between Ankara and Berlin will have any impact on Turkey’s tourism industry. In 2016, 15.34% of foreign arrivals in Turkey were Germans.

In June this year, 383,000 Germans spent their holiday in Turkey, a 10.83% increase from the same month of 2016 while the number of German visitors declined by 17% y/y to 1.25mn across January-June.

In the first half of 2017, Turkey’s tally of tourists rose by 14.05% y/y to 12.25mn.
