South African retail sales slip 1.7% year-on-year in January

Statistics South Africa reported this week South Africa'sretail sales fell by 1.7% y/y in January at constant prices, compared with aslightly revised 3.8% decline in December. According to Reuters, the bureausaid retail sales decreased by 4.1% in the three months to January y/y, also atconstant prices. Economists polled by Reuters forecast a 2.5% y/y fall inretail sales for January, the agency said.
