Slovenia's retail trade turnover increased 0.5% m/m in March after declining for the three previous months. However, in annual terms, retail trade decreased 0.5% in March, following a 1.6% drop in February, the Slovenian Statistical Office announced on April 26.

After recording growth of 8.2% in 2017 retail trade, was expected to maintain the upward trend first reached in 2015 mainly thanks to improved employment and higher salaries. Wages are set for a further boost this year as Prime Minister Miro Cerar's outgoing government has announced plans for a hike in the minimum wage ahead of the general election.

The latest statistical office data indicated that in March against February the increase was due to a higher volume turnover in specialised stores with motor fuels (by 4%), while the turnover without retail trade of motor fuel decreased by 1.3%. Meanwhile, sales of food decreased by 0.4% and of non-food products by 1.4%.

According to the latest statistical office data, in March compared to March 2017, volume turnover in retail trade decreased, even though turnover in specialised stores with motor fuels increased by 3.5%, while in retail trade except automotive fuel it decreased by 3.6%. Food sales decreased by 4.2% and sales of non-food products by 3.7%.

In the first three months of the year, volume turnover in retail trade decreased by 0.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. The decline was influenced by lower turnover in specialised stores with automotive fuel (by 1.7%) and in retail trade with food (by 4.7%). Compared to the same period of the previous year volume turnover in retail trade with non-food products increased by 1.4%, the statistical office said on April 26.
