Slovenia reports modest CPI inflation in September

Consumer prices in Slovenia increased 1.4% y/y and 0.2% m/m in September, the statistical office announced on September 29. Meanwhile the 12-month average price growth was 1.2% against −0.4% in the same period of 2016.

CPI in Slovenia is expected to accelerate further in 2017 and 2018. This is mainly based on expectations that salaries and employment in the country will also maintain an upward trend.

According to the statistical office, the largest upward impact on the annual inflation (0.3pp) came from higher prices of food (by 2.1%) and motor fuels. Diesel prices increased by 6.3% and petrol prices by 5.1%.

The annual inflation was pushed down by 0.2pp by lower prices of second-hand motor cars (by 12.1%). Additional 0.1pp was added by lower prices of wireless telephone services (by 3.2%).

Meanwhile, the monthly growth rate was pushed up by 0.7pp by higher prices of clothing and footwear; with the arrival of autumn-winter collections in stores the prices of garments increased by 12.9% and the prices of footwear by 5.4%. Additional 0.1pp was contributed by higher prices of fresh and chilled vegetables other than potatoes (by 8.2%) and motor fuels. Petrol prices increased by 1.8% and diesel prices by 1.5%. All other price increases in September added additional 0.1pp.

On the other hand, the monthly growth rate was pushed down the most (by 0.6pp) by lower prices of package holidays, which decreased on average by 15.8%. 0.1pp each was contributed by lower prices of wireless telephone services (by 1.8%) and lower prices of services in hotels, motels and inns (by 4.8%).
