Slovenia’s gross domestic expenditure on R&D was the highest within the central and southeastern EU member states in 2016, Eurostat data showed.

Gross domestic expenditure on R&D stood at €303bn in the EU in 2016, which represents an increase of 0.4 % on the year, and a 40% rise compared to 2006. As related to GDP, gross domestic expenditure on R&D (GERD) equaled 2.03% in the EU.

In Slovenia, R&D expenditure equaled 2% of GDP in 2016, up from around 1.5% of GDP ten years before, but down from 2.2% in 2015. However, it is still low compared to the highest R&D intensities, the ratio of GERD to GDP recorded in Sweden was 3.25% and in Austria it was 3.09%.

Within the CEE and SEE member states, the higher intensities were reported in 2016 by the Czech Republic (1.68%), Estonia (1.28%) and Hungary (1.21%).

In the whole of the EU, there were nine member states that reported R&D expenditure that was below 1% of their GDP in 2016, all of which were member states that joined the EU in 2004 or more recently, including Croatia (0.85%), Bulgaria (0.78%), Romania (0.48 %) and Latvia (0.44 %).
