Slovakias retail sales fell by 3.4% y/y in March 2011 after remaining flat on the year in February, the statistics office said. The March decline was significantly higher than the 0.1% y/y fall in January and the 2.4% y/y fall in December. All main subgroups posted negative annual changes in March. Sales in non-specialized stores that accounted for 45.3% of total sales volume declined by 3.3% y/y after increasing in January and February. Sales of other goods in specialized stores continued to decline - down by 0.4% y/y to EUR 255.3mn. However, this is an improvement compared to the 1.1% y/y drop in the previous month. The sales of automotive fuels in specialized stores collapsed by 15.7% y/y most probably reflecting the low demand as a result of high prices. Positive development was registered in the sales of household equipment and sales of ICT that have been growing since the start of the year.
