The number of foreign tourists visiting Slovakia in 2012 increased by 4.6% y/y to 1.53mn, CTK news agency reported quoting data by the Slovak Tourism Agency (SACR) and the statistics office. The figure was the highest since the onset of the global economic crisis in 2008. Traditionally, neighbouring Czech Republic was the major source of tourists to Slovakia in 2012, followed by Poland. The number of Czech tourists staying at Slovak hotels last year rose by 3% y/y to 491,000. The number of domestic tourists also increased last year and thus the total number of visitors in Slovakia went up by 5.6% y/y in 2012. IntelliNews comment : The data shows that Slovak tourism is continuing to recover. The tourist industry suffered a major slump in 2009, when Slovakia introduced the euro, as the number of foreign visitors to the country dropped 25% mainly due to a decline of the number of tourists from neighbouring countries, whose national currencies weakened against the euro.
