There were 13 labor conflicts, 1043 people were injured and 127 people died in H1 in Kazakhstan, according to the data of minister of labor and social protection Gulshara Abdykalikova. She has noted that the conflicts had economic nature i.e. the employees were not happy with the working conditions and wages . The minister has also informed that state labor inspectors revealed salary debts (salaries not being timely paid) totally worth KZT 3.6bn (USD 24.5mn)in 390 companies. The situation is even worse according to the General Prosecutors data quoted by Secretary-of-State Mukhtar Kul-Mukhammed, according to which number of labor conflicts reached 23 in June only. He pointed out that the situation in the gold mine Altynay Kokshetau as well as at the mines of ArcelorMittal was still difficult. Significantly, the government is closely monitoring situation with the strikes after oil workers strike in Zhana-Ozen resulted in 14 deaths (December 2011). The authorities are interested in easing social tension which means that there could be a pressure on the foreign investors to increase wages (as recently declared ArcelorMittal).
