Serbia’s CAR:GO to take on Uber in Croatia

Serbian startup CAR:GO, a so called ‘domestic response to Uber’, has launched in Croatia’s capital Zagreb aiming to propose cheaper rides than Uber, director and founder of CAR:GO Vuk Guberinic told Netokracija, a portal dedicated to digital business and technology, on October 4.

CAR:GO launched in Serbia’s capital Belgrade in 2015 and shortly after expended operations to Podgorica in neighbouring Montenegro.

Guberinic says that CAR:GO decided to extend its operations to Croatia as its local partner Stefan Surlan, a young entrepreneur and for many years Uber’s partner in Croatia, had recognised there was room to start a competitive service there.

“Our further operations and success in Croatia is directly dependent on Stefan. We do believe he will make it great with the all technical support we can give him,” Guberinic said.

Talking about Uber, he told Netokracija that there is enough room for two or three applications of this kind in every town as in time people’s habits change and thus they more often chose this kind of service.

Uber’s ride-sharing taxi services are active in the Croatian cities of Zagreb, Zadar, Split, Sibenik and Dubrovnik as well as in popular festival sites of Tisno and Zrce. Uber Taxi was launched in Zagreb at end-2015, in Split and Dubrovnik in mid-2016, in Zadar in late 2016 and in Sibenik this year. About 100,000 people in Croatia use the Uber application while there around 5,000 drivers, according to AFP.

However, the service is not very welcome by the taxi drivers in Croatia who have held protests against Uber in towns throughout the country, claiming that Uber’s operations in Croatia are against local legislation and the application has been operating illegally in Croatian cities for two years.
