The sales of technical consumer goods (TGC) in Romania increased by 12.8% to EUR 1.4bn in 2011, according to the Temax survey of GfK Romania. The expansion reversed part of the 14.6% decline recorded a year earlier. The growth rate accelerated in Q4 2011, when the sales increased by 15.6% on the year. GfK Temax Romania is an index developed by GfK Retail and Technology to track the technical consumer goods market. The sales in the Information Technology sector, which is the largest segment of the TGC market, expanded by 25.5% to EUR 427mn in full year and by 23.3% in Q4 on the back of strong notebook and tablet sales driven by decreasing prices. The largest segment was thus also the best performing one. Two-digit growth rates for 2011 were also reported in three of the other six market segments: Photo (up by 17.4% y/y), Small Domestic Appliances (15.1% y/y) and Telecommunications (10% y/y). The photo segment was driven by strong sales of entry-level cameras in Q4.
