Sales of retail group Metro Romania down by 3.5% y/y in 2010.

The sales of German retailer Metro on the local market decreased by 3.5% y/y to EUR 1.83bn in 2010, the company reported. The sales of Metro Cash & Carry dropped by 7.3% y/y to EUR 1.14bn, while those of the real,- Hypermarket chain increased by 3.4% y/y to EUR 694mn. The number of shops, including Metro Cash & Carry and real,- Hypermarket, but excluding Metro Punct, increased by 3 to 51 in 2010. Based on an average surface of 7,000 square metres per outlet, Ziarul Financiar calculated that the sales per square metre decreased from EUR 7,500 in 2007 to slightly above EUR 5,000 last year. Metro generated sales of EUR 1.9bn in 2007 prior to the domestic consumption contraction in 2009-2010.
